Patron
In January 2002 well-known sportswoman, Lois Muir, agreed to become our Patron. Lois handled her breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in a characteristically positive way.
Lois is a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, a well-earned recognition for her dedicated services to sport.
Lois represented New Zealand in both basketball and netball and coached the New Zealand netball team for an unsurpassed 15 years until 1988. The award recognises her service to netball and in administration. As well as being involved in the administration of Netball New Zealand Lois has also served the Sports foundation, the Hillary Commission, the Masters Games and the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame into which he herself was inducted in 1993. She has coached the Otago Rebels for the past 4 years and is not looking at retiring just yet.
As a breast cancer survivor Lois is a wonderful role model to women who have experienced breast cancer and we are proud to have her as our Patron.
Supporters
BCN is sincerely appreciative of the generosity and support from present and past donors, sponsors, members and funding organisations, which enables us to keep working towards our goals.
Since 1993 many women have joined BCN and given their time, financial support and bequests. Grants from the
Lottery
Grants Board and
COGS Community Development Group have supported two part-time paid workers - a newsletter editor and administrator. Several one-off grants and donations assisted with setting up the office with computer and other essential equipment and a number of companies have discounted their fees to support our work.
Neville Newcomb Ltd has consistently given a generous discount for
production of Upfront –

BCN is the official charity of the Women’s Challenge Run organised by Dick Quax.
The Allison Roe Trust has supported the Stop Cancer Where it Starts project and printing of resources. Our office administration and magazine production have been funded by the Lotteries Board and COGS. Grants have been received from the Perry Foundation and Lion Foundation.
The First National Conference brought new support in the form of donations,
sponsorships and grants, helping to make the conference a huge success.
Julie Lamb, daughter of Darien Kerkin, previous BCN Treasurer, donates 10% of sales from her CDs and album,
Most and Least, to Breast Cancer Network, which is very much appreciated. In October 2009 she also organised a gig to raise funds for BCN.
Julie says, “
I have chosen this particular organisation primarily because my mum was their treasurer - and she appreciated the work done by them to devolve information and provide advocacy and support.” You can visit Julie’s website at
www.mostandleast.co.nz.
These much appreciated sponsorships, grants and donations have helped BCN with our projects and enabled us to share information. As a result we can reach out to more women to work effectively towards our goals. We acknowledge with sincere thanks the warm-hearted support that has been given by many individuals and organisations.
