Seminar - Breast Cancer and Environmental Risks

Breast Cancer Network is pleased to announce a one day seminar that will address the significance to breast cancer risk of increased exposure to endocrine-disrupting substances in the environment.

Dr Barbara Cohn - Epidemiologist and Director of Child Health and Development Studies, California
Professor Sir Peter Gluckman – Professor of Paediatric & Perinatal Biology, University of Auckland
Professor Murray Mitchell - Professor of Clinical Research, University of Queensland, Australia
Professor Ian Shaw – Professor of Toxicology, University of Canterbury
An expert panel event was first considered in 2007 after BCN petitioned the New Zealand Government to address the high incidence, and resultant high impact of breast cancer on the health of New Zealand women.
We asked for a strategy that would include addressing the role of synthetic environmental chemicals in breast cancer. A recommendation of the Health Select Committee was that an expert advisory panel be set up to initiate research into breast cancer prevention, particularly in the area of endocrine disruption. Celebrating the 100th Edition of Upfront U Kaiora December 2011
We're celebrating a special Breast Cancer Network milestone. The publication of Upfront U Kaiora began in 1993, and in December 2011 we published the 100th edition.
To recognise the occasion we gathered together a group of people affected by breast cancer for a commemorative photoshoot and get-together in the Auckland Domain. Thanks to all who joined in the happy occasion and special thanks to those who helped! With the support of the Mazda Foundation we were delighted to be able to print the 100th edition in colour.
Our co-founder and first editor, Barbara Holt, was present and we were delighted to gather in our past and present editors, layout designer and logo designer for a photo.

Gift of Knowledge
A new organisation has started for those who have tested positive for a faulty BRCA gene. The group regards this knowledge as a gift because knowledge brings with it the option to take action. Already the group has run a conference, and they have a great website up and running. Portraits of Strength
As a fashion photographer Damien Nikora is used to spending his days capturing beautiful women on film. In 2010 he turned his creative energies to telling the stories of women with breast cancer.
Several years ago, when working in Australia, the idea for a project – portraits of strength – came to Damien and he has now photographed women at various stages in their journey with breast cancer. He created portraits of strength, beauty and honesty by capturing a moment in time in the lives of eleven courageous women, whose stories were combined to depict a chronological record of breast cancer. From these images came a moving photographic exhibition, and there are plans for a book and a website/blog.
“The idea was to produce a collection of emotive portraits that provoke thought, understanding, and empathy,” Damien says. Damien’s objectives were to raise awareness, to give the women the opportunity to speak openly, freely and honestly about what was happening to them at a moment in time, and to support and inspire women, their partners, families and friends living with breast cancer. The exhibition held in Auckland in 2010 was very successful and those who visited found inspiration and understanding from viewing his work.

2010 Women's Challenge - a good run

The Women's Challenge is one of New Zealand's most well known women's only fun run/walks and in 2010 was held in the lovely setting of Cornwall Park in Auckland. This event is about celebrating women and promoting good health, overall wellness and fitness. It was apparent that those who joined in had a very enjoyable time, assisted by a beautiful clear autumn day. BCN leaflets were in the registration packs, our volunteers helped with registrations, collected donations at the car park and set up a stand for enquiries. BCN also received a donation based on participant numbers.
BCN is delighted to acknowledge event organiser, Dick Quax, and the Women's Challenge for their continued support of Breast Cancer Network. Thanks everyone!
